The Volta Region is poised for significant economic transformation, with the potential to generate more than $9 billion annually if its abundant natural resources and human capital are strategically harnessed. This was the message delivered by Dr. Daniel McKorley, Chairman of the McDan Group of Companies, at the Hogbetsotsoza Edition of the Volta Economic Forum in Anloga. Dr. McKorley painted a picture of a region rich in minerals, fertile farmland, timber, and fresh water, much of which remains underexploited. Drawing from his own experience as an entrepreneur, he highlighted projects such as a stone quarry in Luta and plans for a major salt mining operation in Keta, while noting that iron ore deposits in the Oti Region present further opportunities for industrial expansion and job creation. Tourism also emerged as a key sector with untapped potential. From the heights of Mount Afadjato to the valleys of Gbadzeme and the cascading waterfalls scattered across the region, there are ample opportunities to develop eco-tourism, adventure tourism, and health-focused tourism. By linking these attractions with agriculture, local craftsmanship, and hospitality services, Dr. McKorley argued that the Volta Region could establish a holistic economic ecosystem capable of attracting investment and generating employment for local communities. The forum also emphasized the importance of environmental stewardship and sustainable development. Protecting water bodies, forests, and cultural landmarks, while discouraging illegal mining activities, was highlighted as essential for long-term growth. The role of youth and the private sector was underscored as critical drivers of innovation and economic participation, particularly within the framework of a 24-hour economy that encourages efficiency and value aggregation.
