Vizhinjam port showcases Kerala’s global vision: Vasavan

Ports Minister V.N. Vasavan on Thursday said that the State government’s determination and sustained efforts have brought the Vizhinjam port project to global prominence. He was inaugurating the State-level seminar of the Ports department at Azhikkal Port, held as part of ‘Vision 2031’ The Minister said that despite challenges, the Vizhinjam port achieved its completion certificate within the stipulated period under the Chief Minister’s leadership. “So far, 554 ships have arrived and the port has handled over 12,500 twenty- foot equivalent units (TEU) with a year. By 2028, Vizhinjam will emerge as one of India’s key maritime gateways,” he said. The approach road for land based cargo movement will be commissioned in December, marking a major milestone in integrated cargo logistics. He added that efforts are under way to create a centralised cargo transport network linking Kovalam, Vizhinjam, Kollam, Beypore and Azhikkal ports. Once operational, this network could shift 10 to 30 % of cargo movement to waterways, reducing traffic congestion, transport costs and carbon emissions while ensuring timely delivery. Highlighting regional progress, the Minister said Kottayam has developed into an inland port handling 6.5 million tonnes of cargo. He noted the potential for logistics parks near Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Idukki, given their strong connectivity through road rail and inland waterways. Two institutions for maritime training and education are being planned and Neendakara and Kodungallur under the Kerala Maritime Board with an MoU already signed. The Board is also exploring eco-friendly conversions of tourist houseboats, he added. An environmental impact study for Beypore -Lakshadweep freight transport is progressing, along with development initiatives to strengthen Beypore’s connectivity with the islands. “There is also a need to explore the possibility of passenger ship services from Kochi to Dubai,” Mr. Vasavan said. He said Kerala’s coastline stretches 590 km, of which 87 km has been earmarked for port development. The Minister said the Azhikkal venue was chosen considering its future significance for marine based industries and its role in shaping sustainable port strategies. The Minister also released the ‘Vision 2031’ policy document of the Port department. The seminar featured discussions on strategic development of the maritime sector. K.V. Sumesh, MLA presided over the event and other public representatives and officials also spoke on the occasion.
