Vitalant will hold several blood drives in the area, with a chance for two donors to win a $10,000 prepaid gift card. Someone in the United States needs blood every two seconds, according to a news release from the nonprofit. However, fewer people tend to donate in the winter months as schedules fill up with holiday activities. All blood types are needed for donation. O-positive, the most common blood type, can help anyone with a positive blood type. November is also National Prematurity Awareness Month. Many premature infants have anemia and need blood transfusions, with as many as 80% of extremely preterm infants needing at least one blood transfusion, according to the National Institute of Health. Vitalant operates a blood donation center at 1213 21st St. in Lewiston, and will hold several blood drives in towns across the region.
