The No. 3 Virginia field hockey team rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to earn a 2-1 win at No. 4 Syracuse on Sunday to remain unbeaten.
After Pati Strunk put the Orange (6-2, 0-2 ACC) on the board with a goal 15 minutes into the game, the Cavaliers (6-0, 2-0 ACC) got the equalizing goal from Frederique Vernooij early in the second half.
Then, with less than a minute to go in regulation, Mia Abello converted a penalty stroke to give Virginia the lead for good.
Sunday’s win came after the Cavaliers earned a 2-0 win over No. 13 Boston College on Friday at Turf Field. Abello and Emma Watchilla each scored a goal for Virginia in the win over the Eagles.
The Cavaliers continue ACC play this upcoming weekend when they travel to the Bay Arena to take on Cal on Friday and Stanford on Sunday.
No. 1 women’s soccer shuts out Syracuse
The No. 1 Virginia women’s soccer team got a late first-half goal from Lia Godfrey and added a pair of second-half goals on the way to a 3-0 victory at Syracuse.
Godfrey, who now has five goals this season, also assisted on Ella Carter’s goal in the 74th minute that gave the Hoos a 2-0 lead. Maggie Cagle scored UVa’s third and final goal on a penalty in the 84th minute.
The Cavaliers (8-0-1, 2-0-0 ACC) held the Orange (4-3-4, 0-2-1) scoreless to earn their seventh shutout victory in nine games this season. UVa goalkeeper Victoria Safradin posted her sixth clean sheet of the year and the 14th of her career.
Virginia hits the road again this week with a matchup at Clemson on Thursday. Kick is set for 7 p.m. on ACCNX.
Men’s soccer upends No. 1 Wake Forest
The Virginia men’s soccer team erupted for six goals in a 6-3 win over Wake Forest at Klöckner Stadium. It was the Cavaliers’ first victory against a top-ranked opponent since 2019.
Freshman Nick Simmonds registered a brace in the first 20 minutes for UVa (5-1-1, 2-0-1 ACC), scoring goals in the 10th and 18th minutes to give the Hoos an early 2-0 lead.
Bacary Tandjigora scored in the 33rd minute, then Sebastian Pop found the back of the net six minutes later to give Virginia a commanding 4-0 lead at halftime. The Cavaliers continued to pour it on after the break, getting a goal in the 61st minute from Luke Burns to build a 5-0 advantage.
Wake Forest (4-1-3, 0-1-1 ACC) made things interesting late by scoring three goals in a 12-minute span to pull within two goals, but Virginia ended the Deacons’ comeback hopes when Sami Oulouheu notched the first goal of his career off a counterattack.
The Cavaliers will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Dayton at Klöckner Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
Volleyball tops Troy, Ohio State
To close out non-conference play, the Virginia volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 27-25) win over Troy on Saturday in the Sports Import Classic in Columbus, Ohio.
Kate Dean led the Cavaliers (7-3) with a team-best nine kills and a career-high 11 blocks. Jasmine Robinson tallied seven kills, while Reagan Ennist added six kills in the victory. Defensively, Teagan Hogan paced all Cavaliers with 10 digs.
In its opening match of the event, UVa topped Ohio State in five sets (15-25, 25-20, 25-7, 23-25, 15-12) at the Covelli Center on Friday night.
Becca Wight, a native of Worthington, Ohio, led the Virginia attack with 13 kills to match Ohio State’s Hannah Jones for the match high. Wight’s 13 kills came on 20 attempts, good for a .650 hitting percentage. To go along with Wight’s 13 kills, Jasmine Robinson had 10 kills of her own and hit .529 in the victory.
Virginia returns home to host Stanford this Saturday and Cal this Sunday at John Paul Jones Arena for the opening weekend of ACC play.
