Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin issued an executive directive on Thursday aimed at protecting women and girl’s sports, as well as designating safe spaces for them to undress.
Executive Directive 14 would first prevent biological males from playing on female-only sports teams and in their competitions in Virginia. It also stops biological males from using designated female spaces where they’re changing or likely to be undressed, such as a locker room.

“The health and safety of women and girls in sex separated spaces and participating in athletic competitions is in serious jeopardy due to irresponsible policies, including those that allow known sex offenders to hunt little girls in public locker rooms,” said Gov. Youngkin. “It is an embarrassment and a tragedy that certain individuals continue to turn a blind eye to these clear violations of the law and of the health, safety, privacy, dignity, and respect of Virginians.”

In August, three female college athletes in Virginia filed a formal request with the Board of Health, claiming they’d been directly harmed by males competing in women’s sports. They asked the Board to change state regulations by banning biological males from organized women’s athletic teams and competitions, and from using designated female spaces.
