Virginia has applied for $1 billion in federal funding with a goal to improve outcomes across the rural parts of the state. Nearly 55 percent of rural localities have a shortage of health professionals. The application is for funding under H.R. 1, better known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Interesting note: it’s the same bill is also gutting the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program and Medicaid, and the health provisions are likely to lead to a loss of health coverage for approximately 100,000 people in Virginia alone. Virginia voted blue in the presidential election, and the most recent gubernatorial election, so the chances of approval probably aren’t great. The plan, known as VA Rural Vitality, reflects extensive input from communities and providers across the Commonwealth, as well as research on national best practices to deliver lasting change in rural health. Four initiatives are included in the plan: empower healthier lives, strengthen the workforce, reimagine care delivery and accelerate innovation. If funding is approved, Virginia plans to: Launch incentive-based programs and technology-driven tools that help Virginians prevent and manage chronic conditions. Build local health pipelines through high schools, community colleges and universities to train and retain the next generation of rural health professionals. Expand hybrid and mobile care models, connect rural providers to larger health systems and develop sustainable payment structures. Deploy advanced technologies, including AI-powered tools, to improve access, coordination and patient outcomes. Kelly, secretary of health and human resources. “From Chincoteague to the Cumberland Gap, we listened to Virginians who want their health care to improve — and VA Rural Vitality directly responds to their needs with innovative, community-based solutions.” The awards will be announced by the end of the year.
