Violent Knife Attack Leaves German Mayor Critical

Iris Stalzer, the newly elected mayor of Herdecke in North Rhine-Westphalia, is in critical condition after being stabbed at her home on Tuesday, October 7. The 57-year-old, a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), had been due to take office on 1 November following her victory in the local elections held on 28 September.

Emergency services were called shortly before 01:00pm after Stalzer was found with multiple stab wounds to her abdomen and back. She was airlifted by helicopter to a nearby hospital, where she remains in a life-threatening condition.

Family Members Present

Teenage Son in Custody as Investigation Begins

At the time of the incident, Stalzer’s 15-year-old adopted son and 17-year-old adopted daughter were reportedly in the home. Police confirmed that the boy has been taken into custody for questioning, while his sister is also being interviewed as a witness.

Authorities said the boy was wearing an evidence-preserving outfit when he was removed from the scene. Initial reports had suggested the attack was carried out by several men on the street, but police later clarified that this account came from the boy’s emergency call and that investigators are currently treating the case as a domestic incident.

No Political Motive Suspected

Investigators Rule Out Political Link at This Stage

While Stalzer’s election campaign had been conducted during a period of strong political debate in the region, police have said there is no indication of a political motive behind the attack. Investigators are focusing on the family setting and are exploring all possible personal motives.

A homicide commission has been established, and the area surrounding the mayor-elect’s home has been sealed off for forensic examination. Police are gathering evidence, reviewing the emergency call, and interviewing witnesses to determine how the attack unfolded.

Reactions from National Leaders

German Officials Condemn the “Abhorrent Act”

The shocking news has drawn widespread condemnation from political figures across Germany. Chancellor Friedrich Merz described the attack as an “abhorrent act” and extended his hopes for Stalzer’s recovery. SPD parliamentary leader Matthias Miersch also issued a statement expressing deep concern, saying he hoped she would survive what he called a “terrible act”.

Local officials in Herdecke have expressed disbelief and sadness, describing Stalzer as a dedicated public servant who had planned to prioritise social inclusion and community welfare once in office.

A Community in Shock

Investigation Ongoing as Residents Await Updates

The quiet town of Herdecke, home to around 23,000 residents, has been left stunned by the incident. Stalzer, a long-time resident, had worked as a labour law specialist before entering politics.

Police have not released further details about the investigation or Stalzer’s current medical condition. As she continues to fight for her life in hospital, residents and colleagues have laid flowers and lit candles outside the town hall in solidarity.

Authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation while the investigation remains active.
