Vikings Connected to Surprising Potential Quarterback Trade

The Minnesota Vikings are going to be without veteran quarterback Carson Wentz for the rest of the season after he suffered a shoulder injury. Unfortunately, that leaves the Vikings in a bit of a tough position. Wentz had been the starter for Minnesota over the last five games. He will end his season throwing for 1,216 yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions, while completing 65.1 percent of his passes. Now, the team will move forward with J.J. McCarthy as its starting quarterback. The Vikings have Max Brosmer as their backup quarterback behind McCarthy and also signed John Wolford. However, those two options behind the second-year signal caller aren't the most ideal scenario. One intriguing option has been suggested for the Vikings. Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated has suggested that Minnesota trade for New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields. "Fields is the perfect high-upside quarterback for O’Connell to mix into the fold should J.J. McCarthy struggle to play with his injured ankle," Orr wrote. "The move is an attempt to restock the cupboard in Minnesota after both Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones left for high-end starting jobs elsewhere. O’Connell learned a valuable lesson about hubris and the limitations of coaching this offseason by also eschewing Aaron Rodgers after McCarthy’s promising spring. Fields, who is not valued by Jets ownership, would likely welcome the change with open arms." Fields has had a rough first season with the Jets. In the seven games he has played in New York, Fields has completed 64.1 percent of his passes for 1,089 yards, five touchdowns, and no interceptions. He has also picked up 288 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. Making a move for Fields would give the Vikings a great chance to turn back to McCarthy as their starter. However, if McCarthy is unable to play at a high level, they would have a legitimate quarterback option with starting experience behind him. But, playing for the New York franchise is no easy task for any quarterback. Depending on the price tag, making a trade for Fields could make a ton of sense for Minnesota. He would give the Vikings a legitimate backup option not just for this season, but for next year as well.
