The Minnesota Vikings attempted to tough out a win against the Los Angeles Chargers on “Thursday Night Football,” with quarterback Carson Wentz playing through a significant shoulder injury. Now, that injury will knock him out for the season. J.J. McCarthy is expected to be ready to return to the lineup this week. The only other QB on the #Vikings roster for now is undrafted rookie Max Brosmer. https://t.co/DzIgF0d4ra— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) October 27, 2025 Wentz was wearing a shoulder brace that would help him make it through the game, but it appears that his injury was far worse than expected. The good news is that the Vikings will get back J.J. McCarthy this week, after the young signal caller finally healed from an ankle injury. Carson Wentz #11 of the Minnesota Vikings looks on against the Cincinnati Bengals in the third quarter at U.S. Bank Stadium on September 21, 2025 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. More news: Bills Receive Brutal Injury News on Ed Oliver Wentz posted a 2-3 record in the five games he started while McCarthy was healing from his ankle injury. He threw 1,216 yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions in that time. McCarthy will assume quarterback duties now that he is healed, but it leaves the Vikings in a tough situation. The only other quarterback on the roster is rookie Max Brosmer. Minnesota may make a move for a quarterback ahead of the trade deadline, as any sort of injury to McCarthy would place the team in a tough situation. Brosmer nearly had to start with Wentz being shaken up in the recent games. Brosmer is definitely a developmental quarterback and may not be ready to take on starting duties. The Vikings have been attached to Kirk Cousins, but that trade is unlikely to happen. The Vikings may need to find a quarterback who is a bit lower on the depth chart, such as Jameis Winston. Winston sits behind Russell Wilson as the New York Giants’ third-string quarterback. Winston would be a good value signing and be able to back up McCarthy. Either way, the Vikings are in a tough spot with Wentz needing season-ending surgery. For more on the Vikings, head to Newsweek Sports.
