There was a big representation of freemasons at the funeral of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, on Monday, September 15, 2025.
Members of the Grand Lodge of Ghana, alongside the District Grand Lodge of England, joined thousands of mourners at Manhyia Palace to honour the late Asantehemaa.
Nana Konadu Yiadom III, who passed away in August 2025, had reigned for eight years. Her passing was announced at an Asanteman Council meeting on August 11. She was 98.
An elaborate four-day funeral rite, known in Asante custom as Doteyie, has been scheduled from September 15 to Thursday, September 18, when she will be laid to rest.
On the first day, many Ghanaians thronged the Manhyia Palace to mourn with the Asantehene. Among them were the Freemasons, who were led by Most Worshipful Dr. Nortey Kwashie Omaboe, Grand Master, and Very Worshipful Owulaku Hood, District Grand Master,and other distinguished senior brethren.
Their presence served a dual purpose: paying respects to the departed Asantehemaa while offering comfort Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the biological brother of the late queen and the Grand Patron of the Grand Lodge of Ghana.
In a video, members of the Freemason entourage were seen paying homage to the Asantehene individually. Each of their handshakes with Otumfuo was a moment excitement for them.

After signing the book of condolence, the brethren demonstrated their commitment to relief in concrete terms, presenting a donation of GHS 105,000 on behalf of Ghana’s Freemasons. This gesture underscored the fraternity’s enduring contributions to Ghanaian society, spanning health initiatives and educational projects, while affirming its steady presence during moments of collective need..
Otumfuo and Freemasonry
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II is one of the prominent Ghanaians associated with Freemason. In 2024, he celebrated his 25th anniversary as a Freemason.
The anniversary, which coincided with the his silver jubilee as the Asantehene, saw a good number of Freemasons trooping to the Manhyia Palace celebrate with him.
In his address Otumfuo Osei Tutu II stated that he had no regrets about his 25-year membership in Freemasonry.
The Asantehene also stressed his commitment to making Freemasonry beneficial to Ghana.

Otumfuo’s daughter weeps at Asantehemaa’s funeral
In a related news, YEN.com.gh has reported that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s daughter, Dr Caryn Agyemang Prempeh, had broken down in tears during the Asantehemaa’s funeral.
Dr Prempeh, also known as Ohemaa Afia Kobi, appeared in simple mourning cloth without makeup looking completely inconsolable.
The emotional moment went viral on social media, with Ghanaians expressing condolences and praising her humility and strength in mourning her late aunt.
