VIDEO: Wild mountain goats steal the show on Calpe coast

In a stunning and unexpected scene, six wild Cabra montés (Spanish ibex) were filmed on Monday November 4 dashing across the rocky breakwater of Marina PortBlanc (Puerto Blanco) in Calpe, with the majestic Peñyal d’Ifac rising in the background. The dawn light reflected on the sea, accentuating the unlikely union of marine ambience and mountain wildlife. Interestingly, the appearance of wild goats in urban coastal settings isn’t entirely unprecedented in Calpe. In May 2023, one of the animals climbed onto rooftops in the old town, prompting a response by the local police to return it to the Sierra d’Oltà. Moreover, similar goat incursions have been documented elsewhere along the Costa Blanca and wider Valencian territory — for instance, in Jérica (Castellón) where rooftop‑roaming goats have sparked concern among residents. The presence of mountain goats in Calpe is largely due to the town’s unique geography. The steep cliffs of the Peñyal d’Ifac and surrounding hills provide a natural habitat where these agile animals can thrive, safe from most predators. A striking reminder of the wild landscape that frames the Costa Blanca As urban expansion and tourism have brought the town closer to their traditional grazing areas, it is increasingly common to see goats wandering along coastal paths, rocky outcrops, and even into the outskirts of residential areas. Their occasional appearances in town offer a striking reminder of the wild landscape that frames Calpe, blending natural beauty with the seaside lifestyle. These events highlight not just the adaptability of mountain wildlife but also the growing intersection of natural habitats with built environments. While such sightings can delight visitors and locals alike, they also raise practical questions — how to manage wildlife in areas where urban, touristic and natural zones blur, how to ensure both human safety and animal welfare, and how to preserve the striking landscapes of the Costa Blanca without losing the wild surprise.
