Victorian ski resort Falls Creek has recorded its coldest October night in 19 years, with temperatures plunging to -6.6 degrees. The tail end of a cold air mass with polar origins has triggered sub-zero temperatures in the state. A statewide low of -7.3 degrees was recorded at ski resort Mount Hotham, according to Weatherzone, which was only 1.1 degrees above its coldest October night on record. READ MORE: Two dead after mine explosion near regional town Outside of the ski resorts, residents in the small East Gippsland community of Gelantipy experienced the coldest night in any month in three years after the temperature dipped to -2.3 degrees overnight. Residents in parts of New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, Tasmania and South Australia were also left shivering as temperatures plummeted last night and into this morning. The coldest temperature in South Australia was the town of Keith West in the state's south-east which recorded -1.5 degrees. READ MORE: Aussies about to benefit from major $7.9 billion health boost In NSW, a statewide low of -8.8 degrees was recorded at Perisher Valley, while Green Cape on the far south coast experienced its lowest October minimum in 15 years after recording 7.8 degrees. Mt Ginini in the Brindabella Range on the border of the Australian Capital Territory and NSW recorded -5.4 degrees, which was within just 0.1°C of the coldest October night in the site's 21 years of records, Weatherzone said. Canberra also shivered through a cold night as temperatures fell to -0.2 degrees. In Tasmania, a statewide low of -4.2 degrees was recorded in the central plateau town of Liawenee.
