Victim in Lapeer County shooting was ‘everyone’s friend,’ expecting father, wife says

GRAND BLANC, MI -- As a senior in high school, Logan Welch didn’t throw a football to score a touchdown at a Grand Blanc high school game — he threw it to ask Hannah to homecoming. The ball sailed into the stands with a message written across it: “Hannah, homecoming?” She caught it, and with that catch began a love story that would span more than a decade. Hannah Welch who married Logan in 2022, remembered meeting him in ninth grade, sharing gym and health classes at Grand Blanc High School. They were friends for years before that football toss turned their connection into something more. Hannah didn’t expect Logan to be taken from her shortly after their 13-year anniversary together. The couple were expecting their first child. Logan Welch, 30, was shot and killed in a workplace shooting by a 32-year-old Columbus man at Trims Unlimited in Lapeer County on Nov. 5. Logan was an employee at the company. Logan, who also coached football at Grand Blanc West Middle School since 2019, was taken to the hospital and later died due to injuries sustained in the shooting. Logan will be remembered for his ability to build meaningful relationships, his love for sports and coaching and his friendship with everyone, Hannah said. “I would want the community to remember Logan as everyone’s friend,” Hannah said. “He was the most genuine person ever. He was fun, sensitive and real. He was everyone’s hype man. You always felt you were with a friend when he was there.” Logan earned a bachelor’s degree in sports management and a master’s degree in business leadership from Central Michigan University. Logan and Hannah were both lifelong residents of the Grand Blanc community. The two were expecting their first child in April. Logan was eagerly anticipating the opportunity to become a “girl dad,” according to his obituary. The Grand Blanc High School football team wore an “LW” sticker during their game against Clarkston on Friday, Nov. 7. A moment of silence was held in his honor. A verified GoFundMe was set up to support the Welch family. More than $50,000 has already been raised. A memorial service for Logan will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16, at the Grand Blanc High School Gymnasium. Visitation at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14.
