Vice President reaffirms commitment to girls’ education and empowerment

By Rachel Quartey & Rukayatu Musah ‎Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to advancing policies that promote the welfare and empowerment of women and girls, particularly in education, health and economy. ‎Delivering a message on her behalf at the “Women in Gospel Music (WIGM) — Gratitude 2025” Celebration, her Press Secretary and Spokesperson, Maame Ama Pratt, praised the group’s initiative to support young girls in school with sanitary towels, describing it as “a timely and life-changing act of compassion.” ‎The Press Secretary and Spokesperson of the Vice President highlighted that menstrual hygiene remains a major barrier to girls’ education in rural Ghana, where many miss school due to lack of sanitary pads and inadequate sanitation facilities. ‎“Approximately one in four girls in rural northern communities miss school during their menstrual periods, leading to significant learning losses and decreased confidence,” she stated. ‎She said the Women in Gospel Music initiative directly complements national efforts under the leadership of ‎President John Dramani Mahama, who continues to champion programmes that enhance the dignity, education, and well-being of women and girls. ‎‎“This initiative aligns perfectly with the government’s ongoing policies aimed at empowering girls and ensuring that no child is left behind because of gender-related challenges,” Maame Ama Pratt emphasized. ‎On behalf of the Vice President, the Press Secretary and Spokesperson expressed gratitude to the leadership of Women in Gospel Music, led by President Abena Ruthy and Rev. Dr. Mary Ghansah, for using their platform to advance social impact beyond music. She encouraged them to continue serving as agents of change and hope within their communities. “Gratitude must inspire us to extend kindness and contribute to national progress,” she added. “I urge every woman in gospel music to offer her best to God, remain united, and continue serving humanity.” ‎President of WIGM, Abena Ruthy, said the group, which has been in existence for 12 years, aims to mentor and empower young women in music while helping them establish side businesses to generate additional income. ‎The celebration featured inspiring performances and concluded with donations of sanitary pads for onward distribution to students in the Ga Central Municipality. ‎‎”Gratitude 2025" celebration, themed “Our God Reigns,” brought together leading gospel ministers, particularly women, to reflect on faith, service, and the power of gratitude to transform lives and communities.
