A vet has revealed a product to add to your dog's diet that could "change" their life for the better and potentially cut down expensive medication costs. Millions of people around the globe are devoted dog owners, with these four-legged companions becoming cherished family members . Owning a dog comes with many responsibilities, with maintaining their health and happiness being paramount. Just like humans, dogs can experience allergies, with symptoms that can be irritating and exasperating for them. Many pet owners turn to social media seeking solutions and guidance from fellow owners, as well as professionals keen to share their expertise and specialist advice online . Dr Amir Anwary is one well-known vet who's built a loyal following on TikTok , thanks to his regular video posts where he offers his guidance and suggestions. In a recent clip, the expert highlighted the advantages of incorporating omega-3 into a dog's diet, calling it "life changing" for them. Speaking to the camera, he said: "If you have a dog that is constantly scratching and nibbling themselves, then this video is for you guys." The vet went on: "By far, one of the most common conditions I see in dogs is this constant nibbling and scratching and, in most cases, they're diagnosed with allergies. "Now, in all of these cases, I always recommend that the owner starts their dog on an omega-3 supplement because it's so, so, so effective yet there are so many owners out there that have dogs suffering with this that are not using omega-3." The vet then proceeded to explain why an omega-3 supplement was "so important" for dogs, highlighting it's "natural anti-inflammatory" benefits which helps "tip the scales of inflammation", reducing skin problems potentially triggered by an increase in omega-6 found in certain dog foods and treats. Omega-6 is a form of essential fat the body requires to support normal growth and cell function. It's beneficial in moderation but needs to be consumed with omega-3 fatty acids to prevent the inflammation it can trigger. Moving on to another advantage, the vet added: "Omega-3 is really, really good for the skin layer; it strengthens the skin layer, it holds hydration, it holds water, it makes the coat healthy and shiny." He pointed out "the skin is where dogs experience their allergies" so by boosting the health of their skin layer, it should help minimise the unwanted side effects of an allergic reaction. The Kennel Club confirms research has demonstrated omega-3 for dogs "can control inflammation and help with wound healing", as well as being beneficial for their skin, coat and supporting stiff, aching joints. Dr Anwary said "several studies have shown that when you give a dog omega-3", it reduces the need for harsher - and pricier - medications like "cortisone", "Cytopoint" and more. In additional text on his video, he explained: "Apoquel and Cytopoint are definitely effective but they are purely symptomatic treatments. They add no real value". The vet finished: "Why would you not use an omega-3 supplement that reduces the need for these very expensive medications, and it strengthens your dog's skin and it acts as a natural anti-inflammatory? "It has so many benefits yet dog owners will stick to using an injection every single month that merely treats the symptoms but isn't adding any extra value to their dog's health." In the caption accompanying his video, the vet simply added: "Stay for 2 minutes and this will change your dog's life! Omega-3 is the best supplement you can use for dogs with skin problems!" He reiterated it does take time for the health benefits to become noticeable and recommended opting for a high quality omega-3 supplement. If you have any concerns or questions about your dog's health, it's best to book an appointment with your vet to get a tailored check-up, assessment and treatment plan.
