At midnight last night, the US government shut down after Republicans and Democrats failed to reach an agreement on a continuing budget resolution.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries met with President Donald Trump on Monday night in an attempt to stave off the shutdown, but it quickly became clear that they wouldn’t be able to come to an agreement when Trump posted a deeply offensive AI-generated video of the two Democrats shortly after their meeting.
Then, last night, hours before the shutdown went into effect, Trump shared pictures from the meeting that prominently feature a certain red hat:

And another one:
Jeffries told CNN that the hats just “randomly” showed up during the meeting and called it the “strangest thing ever.” He went on to say, “And I just looked at the hat, looked at JD Vance who was seated to my left and said, ‘Don’t you got a problem with this?’ And he said, ‘No comment.’ And that was the end of it.”

But when he was asked about the hats on Fox News, Vance did have a comment after all.
A Fox anchor mentioned that Trump had shared pictures from the meeting with Democratic representatives, and Vance appeared to chuckle:
She went on to say, “We wanted to ask you about any insight into that meeting, because the last shutdown, Mr. Vice President, was 35 days. Americans can’t go — here are the pictures — Americans cannot go that long without getting a paycheck or being furloughed, so can you give us some insight into what they talked about, maybe how we can come to a compromise?”
Then, another anchor chimed in laughingly, saying, “And the hats — Trump trolling them with ’28 hats?” Vance smiled and replied, “That’s the most important part. There were also the Trump 2028 hats, which I think made the minority leader in both the House and the Senate very uncomfortable.”

In response, people are like, “Priorities, dude.”
And they compared displaying these hats to “pissing on the constitution.”
Someone else pointed out, “Nods to illegality and disregard for the constitution should make you uncomfortable dude. Because of. You know. Your job description.”
And someone else summed it up, tweeting, “This is what they’re focused on.”
