Vaccination drive under way in Mysuru to mark World Rabies Day

People For Animals (PFA), Mysuru, in association with Reaching Out To Animals, has launched a week-long vaccination drive to mark World Rabies Day on September 28.

The anti-rabies vaccination drive commenced on September 23, the objective of which, is to create greater awareness about rabies prevention and the importance of vaccinating pets.

The day also commemorates Louis Pasteur, the French scientist who developed the first rabies vaccine, and is promoted globally by the World Health Organisation and the Global Alliance for Rabies Control, according to PFA.

It said in a release that on the first day of the drive, 127 dogs were vaccinated in different localities such as Kergalli, Salhundi, Nanjarajayahundi, Ramnahalli, Hanchya, Mahadevpura, Sattgalli, Bharatnagar, Vishveshwaranagar, Manandavadi Road, Kuvempunagar 2nd Stage, BEML Nagar, Shivapura, Srirampura, etc.

In addition, several dogs received their first-ever vaccination, as some owners were previously unaware of its importance. Volunteers also spoke with the community about the benefits of Anti-Rabies Vaccine and the Animal Birth Control programme, helping pet-owners keep their animals healthy and safe.

In addition, free anti-rabies vaccination for dogs and cats are being offered at the PFA shelter in Bogadi from September 23 to 28, the release added.
