Uzbekistan sows 875,000 hectares of cotton with plans to harvest 3.7mn tons - Daryo.uz

Uzbekistan sowed 875,000 hectares of cotton this year, with agreements to harvest 3.7mn tons of raw cotton. More than 900 machines have been mobilized for the harvest, while farmers have been provided with fuel and fertilizers at preferential prices.

These updates were presented at an expanded meeting chaired by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, which focused on the progress of cotton harvesting, preparations for the autumn-winter season, the nationwide Yashil Makon (Green Nation) program, and investment and export dynamics.

While the pace of harvesting is on track in Surkhandarya, Khorezm, Ferghana, and Andijan regions, delays persist in Samarkand, Syrdarya, and Navoi. The president instructed the creation of operational headquarters to address bottlenecks, ensure timely and high-quality harvesting, and resolve farmers’ concerns. Responsible structures were also tasked with ensuring the prompt transfer of funds for harvested cotton.

The discussion revealed that out of 640 schools and kindergartens set for repairs, 125 remain unfinished. Nearly 1,000 residential buildings out of 9,800 are not yet ready for winter, and boiler house repairs in Jizzakh and Surkhandarya have not been completed.

So far, 55,000 tons of coal have been supplied to the population, including 9,000 tons to 381 remote settlements, while 27,000 tons remain in storage. The president instructed that these reserves be delivered promptly and emphasized the reliable supply of 330,000 tons of liquefied gas for the winter season. He underlined that officials bear personal responsibility for uninterrupted gas and electricity supplies.

Under the greening initiative, 137mn seedlings were planted in spring, though 27.5mn dried due to early heat and insufficient irrigation. To address this, 125mn trees and shrubs will be planted this autumn, followed by another 75mn in spring.

The head of the state emphasized that seedlings should only be planted in areas with irrigation infrastructure and called for expanding urban green zones. “Green” master plans for Tashkent, Nukus, and all regional centers are to be developed within two months with the involvement of scientists, urban planners, and environmental experts.

By the end of nine months, foreign investment inflows are expected to reach $33.5bn. Exports from January to August totaled $23bn, up 31% compared to last year.

However, performance has been uneven across regions, with some showing declines. The president tasked officials with securing an additional $7.3bn in exports by year-end, attracting more investment, and diversifying markets. He also noted plans to establish partnerships between Uzbek regions and specific U.S. states to boost direct business ties.

President Mirziyoyev concluded the meeting with instructions to ensure the timely and complete implementation of tasks across all sectors, from agriculture and energy to environmental programs and economic growth.
