The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced a major modernization program to install “technology-forward” lobbies in post offices nationwide.
The program will see the implementation of features including 24/7 smart lockers, enhanced self-service kiosks, and the Rapid Drop mobile app to boost self-service convenience.
The changes are part of the agency’s ongoing “Delivering for America” transformation plan, and are scheduled for implementation in phases through 2025 and 2026.
Newsweek has contacted the USPS via email for comment.
Why It Matters
The modernization drive will affect millions of Americans who use post offices across the country. The changes are designed to reduce lobby wait times, increase self-service accessibility, and streamline access to government services.
USPS is undertaking the improvements amid broader efforts to resolve financial challenges, modernize infrastructure, and improve postal services in the agency’s decade-long plan.
What To Know
The upgraded features set to appear in post office lobbies include the following:
24/7 smart lockers—customers can have packages delivered to these lockers via Click-N-Ship and pick them up at any time of day or night. The lockers are currently available at 700 locations, and are expanding to more.
Enhanced self-service kiosks—these kiosks will allow customers to weigh packages, print labels, purchase supplies and mail packages. USPS says the kiosks can reduce lobby wait times by 40 percent, and are currently present in 2,600 locations nationwide.
Rapid Drop mobile app—the mobile app enables customers to store prepaid labels, find post offices, track packages, subscribe to alerts, speed up label creation, and initiate package acceptance.
Digital information displays—new signage will guide customers through services and help them complete tasks quickly.
Streamlined layouts—redesigned, open layouts will create better traffic flow, make supplies easier to find, and further reduce wait times.
Government services—more locations will now offer services for other federal agencies, including passport processing, fingerprinting, and identity proofing, consolidating government tasks under one roof.
Complete renovations with the full offering of new services can already be found in numerous cities including Los Angeles and Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

“People expect speed, clarity and technology-driven convenience—and that’s what our new lobbies deliver, while still offering the trusted, in-person attention that defines the Postal Service.”
Robert Dixon, senior director of delivery and retail technology at USPS, said: “It’s exciting to bring new capabilities across multiple platforms to our retail lobbies and watch our customers get in and out quicker at times that work for them.”
What Happens Next
The initial phase of lobby upgrades is scheduled for completion by the end of October 2025. USPS plans to expand the modernization effort to additional locations during the 2026 fiscal year.
