INITIATIVES
In celebration of its 100th anniversary, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy has teamed up with Kevin Nealon to launch a campaign that challenges dictionaries to redefine the phrase “take a hike.”
The conservancy is calling on major dictionary publishers like Merriam-Webster and the Oxford English Dictionary to define “take a hike” as “a friendly invitation to reset, recharge, and reconnect with the outdoors.” The Appalachian Trail Conservancy has encouraged the public to join the movement by signing and sharing their petition to shift how people talk about hiking, wellness and the power of being outdoors.
The “Take a Hike” campaign is launching at a time when mental health challenges are increasingly widespread. According to studies from Harvard Medical School and Mental Health America, nearly half the global population will experience a mental health disorder by age 75.
The Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s goal for the campaign is to highlight the benefits of spending time in nature as an accessible way to support mental and physical well-being.
