US reverses visa restrictions on Ghana, restores five-year multiple entry

Ghana has secured a major diplomatic breakthrough as the United States has reversed the visa restrictions imposed on the country in July this year. The development means Ghanaians are now eligible for five-year multiple-entry visas, along with other enhanced consular privileges. The announcement was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on his Facebook page on Friday, September 26. He said the information was communicated to him by the US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker, during a bilateral meeting with Ghana’s delegation on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. “Big win for Ghana! The US visa restrictions imposed on Ghana have been reversed. Ghanaians can now be eligible for five-year multiple-entry visas and other enhanced consular privileges. According to him, the decision follows months of high-level diplomatic negotiations between Accra and Washington. It will be recalled that in July 2025, the US government imposed visa restrictions on Ghana and several other countries, limiting citizens to a maximum three-month single-entry visa. The Trump Administration at the time cited longstanding concerns about visa overstays, particularly by Ghanaian students. The reversal has been described as a sign of healthier and stronger Ghana–US relations going forward.
