US Reduces Tariffs on Japanese Automobiles to 15%

Tokyo, September 16 (QNA) – The US lowered tariffs on automobiles from Japan to 15%, effective Tuesday. The new rate was calculated by reducing the current 25% tariff to 12.5%, then adding the existing 2.5% tariff, Japanese (Kyodo) News Agency reported.

The reduced tariff is in line with the basic tariffs applied to most other goods imported from Japan, in accordance with the executive order signed by US President Donald Trump on Sept. 4.

The document issued by the US Department of Commerce clarified that the levy will not be applied to Japanese products that are already subject to tariffs above 15%. The measure will be applied retroactively starting from Aug. 7, 2025. (QNA)
