A plumber from Texas, United States, accidentally stumbled upon a decomposed human skull while mowing the lawn. Police later found multiple bones and additional remains at a nearby location, as per the reports.
Walter Stephens, who works at Harrell Commercial Plumbing in San Antonio, was working when he made the shocking discovery, saying it looked like a “dried cantaloupe”, according to the New York Post.
“I saw what looked like a dried cantaloupe or something,” said Stephens. “I picked it up, and the bottom part of the jaw stayed on the ground. When I turned it over and saw the teeth, I was like, ‘Oh my God’.”
Stephens said he was shocked by the discovery and immediately called the police. When the authorities arrived, they found a detached jaw, multiple bones, and other small body parts scattered behind the business near Martinez Creek.
“It was a crazy experience,” the plumber told a local media outlet, adding that he and his boss often roamed the property and believed the remains were recently moved there, possibly by an animal or a person.
As per the New York Post, the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Thursday that the skull has since been identified as belonging to 30-year-old Austin Tomas Wyrosdick. The cause and manner of death are still pending.
Authorities are expected to investigate the skull’s origin, identity, and cause of death. Forensic techniques, such as radiocarbon dating – commonly used in similar cases – may help determine its age.
