US-based Guyanese Dr Keith Cummings last Thursday donated 100 surgery and medicine books valued at $1 million to the University of Guyana’s (UG) main campus library, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown. At the handing-over ceremony, Dr Cummings, an advocate in medicine and philanthropy, was joined by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Emanuel Cummings, Registrar Dr Nigel Gravesande, Deputy Registrar Dr Theodosius Velloza, Dr Areefa Alladin-Karan, Dr Sharlene Goberdhan and Dr Lotoya Harris among others. As a proud graduate of UG, Dr Cummings, who last year received the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award for his volunteer service from then US President Joseph Biden, has been donating books and periodicals to the UG library for years. “The education I received from UG, with its rigorous curriculum and dedicated faculty, has not only laid the foundation for me to become an excellent clinician and teacher on the international stage, but has also been a blessing to my family and me,” Dr Cummings shared. He said his UG education provided an opportunity for him to impact lives not only in Guyana, but also in other countries. He has been able to hold academic positions in several medical schools like Emory University, St George’s University, Icahn School of Medicine, along with his alma mater. According to Dr Cummings, the ACP Medical Knowledge Self- Assessment Programme (MKSAP) has been the most reliable, concise source of medical knowledge for doctors training in the field of medicine over the past 50 years. “These are brand new copies of the MKSAP. Additionally, there are many surgery texts to sharpen the surgical knowledge and skills of our students. These learning resources provide UG students access to high- quality, evidence- based learning materials,” he stated. Hailing from the village of Brighton, Corentyne, Berbice, Dr Cummings began his career training as a pharmacist and later earned his medical degree from UG.
