Urologist raises awareness on testicular cancer among men

By; Ama Joycelyn Tseyiboe Urologist at the Tema General Hospital, Dr. Lemuel Davis-Bray speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show, on November 5, 2025, underscored the need for early detection and regular self-examinations among men, especially those between the ages of 15 and 45. “Most of our patients are men, and while prostate conditions dominate, testicular cancer is one that affects a younger demographic,” Dr. Davis-Bray explained. He described testicular cancer as the abnormal growth of cells within the testicles, the male reproductive organs responsible for producing sperm and the hormone testosterone. Cancer simply means cells that have started behaving abnormally. So when the cells in the testicles begin to act differently from their normal function, which is producing sperm and testosterone that’s when cancer develops”; he said. Dr. Davis-Bray encouraged men to perform Testicular Self-Examinations (TSA) regularly to detect any unusual lumps or swellings early. He explained that the best time to do this is after a warm bath, when the scrotum is relaxed and easier to examine. “Use both hands to gently roll each testicle between your fingers and thumb. If you notice any lumps, bumps, or changes in size or shape, see your doctor immediately. You must know the normal feel of your testicles know your balls”; he said. He noted that while the two testicles may differ slightly in size or position, any distinct lump or hardness should not be ignored. Dr. Davis-Bray stressed that while the exact cause of testicular cancer remains unknown, certain factors increase risk including family history and undescended testicles (a condition where the testicles fail to descend into the scrotum at birth). He also cautioned against tight underwear and excessive heat, which can affect sperm production and testicular health. “The testicles don’t like too much heat,” he explained with a smile. In cold weather, the scrotum shrinks to keep them warm; in hot weather, it relaxes to release heat. So yes men should free their balls”; he mentioned. Source link
