Sausages are being withdrawn from supermarket shelves over concerns that they could cause a serious allergic reaction in certain consumers who consume them.
The Jolly Hog is urgently withdrawing its Leek Porkers sausages from Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Morrisons after an alert by the Food Standards Agency (FSA). The company stated that the notice had been released becuase the products contain milk which is not listed on the packaging.
The FSA explained this makes the product a “possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents.” Signs of a milk allergy differ, but in serious cases, contact can result in anaphylaxis, a severe, life-threatening allergic response that can cause blood pressure to plummet, throat swelling and unconsciousness within minutes, reports the Mirror.
The product withdrawal specifically covers The Jolly Hog Leek Porkers 6 British Sausages range, weighing 400g and with a use by date of 28 September 2025.
The Jolly Hog declared: ‘If you have bought the above product with the date affected and have a milk allergy, we advise you not to eat them. ‘.
It continued: ‘Customers are asked to bring to their nearest store and a full refund will be issued for the product.
‘We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your cooperation. ‘.
The FSA regularly releases withdrawal health warnings, to inform shoppers when people face risks from issues like absent allergy details, contamination or other health hazards. Notices have been displayed in-store to inform customers about the recall and provide guidance on what to do if they’ve purchased the product.
For further details, consumers are encouraged to reach out to customer care at info@thejollyhog. com.
The manufacturer has also been advised by the government to liaise with relevant allergy support groups, who will then update their members regarding the incident.
It’s worth noting that cow’s milk allergies are the most prevalent cause of allergic reactions among children across the UK, and even small amounts can provoke a severe reaction in those who are sensitive.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has reiterated that food products are frequently recalled or withdrawn when there is missing, incorrect, or misleading allergen information, even if the product is safe for the majority of people.
