Urgent recall issued for nearly 2 million cars from top automakers amid safety fears

Urgent recall issued for nearly 2 million cars from top automakers amid safety fears MORE: Elon Musk's decade-long dream suffers comedy of errors in latest setback By CHRIS MELORE, US ASSISTANT SCIENCE EDITOR Published: 14:38 GMT, 28 October 2025 | Updated: 15:19 GMT, 28 October 2025 America's top automakers have recalled nearly two million of their most popular cars and trucks, citing various safety concerns that could endanger drivers. Ford Motor Company was most affected, warning of a problem with backup cameras in 1.4 million Ford and Lincoln vehicles. The issue could make it harder for drivers to see behind them, creating a risk of crashing into something while reversing. Another 292,000 of Chrysler's Ram ProMasters have been recalled due to an engine fan that might overheat because of worn parts, increasing the potential for a fire. Nearly 64,000 of Tesla's Cybertrucks have also been recalled because of an issue with the front headlights being so bright that they could blind oncoming drivers at night. Thousands of other vehicles from Jeep, Cadillac, and Chevrolet were also recalled in a flurry of auto industry announcements last week. The problems reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) included everything from software glitches that caused vehicles to lose power to rubber issues with tires that could cause some cars to swerve and crash. The recalls also involve vehicles dating back to 2015, meaning drivers who have had their cars for nearly a decade could be affected by the new issues emerging. Ford announced that more than 1.4 million vehicles have been recalled due to camera and brake issues (stock image) Fiat Chrysler's Ram Ram ProMaster has been recalled due to a problem that could cause a fire near the engine The most widespread problem affects 1,448,655 Ford and Lincoln vehicles from 2015 to 2020. Specifically, the 2015-2019 Ford Flex, 2015 Ford Explorer, 2015 Lincoln MKT, 2015 Lincoln MKZ, 2015-2016 Ford C-Max, 2015-2016 Ford Escape, 2015-2016 Ford Taurus, 2016 Ford Fusion, 2018-2019 Ford Taurus, 2019 Lincoln MKT, 2019 Ford Fiesta, and 2020 Ford Mustang all have the same issue with the backup camera. The October 13 recall noted that the picture in these park-assist cameras could become fuzzy, flickery or go completely black while drivers are reversing. Owners have been advised to take their cars to a Ford or Lincoln dealer, where the camera will be swapped for free. Ram ProMasters are mainly work vans used for business, with the new recall on October 23 affecting 291,664 vehicles from 2018 to 2026. The fan that cools the engine might overheat because of worn parts and weak wiring protection. According to NHTSA, a fix is still being figured out, with owners expected to receive letters from Ram in November. 'Electrical circuits that overheat increase the risk of a fire. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 800-853-1403,' NHTSA officials noted in a statement. Nearly 64,000 of Tesla's Cybertrucks (Pictured) have been recalled due to a software glitch which blind oncoming drivers at night 1.2m US trucks feared to be driving with dangerous safety lock issue linked to fatal accidents As for Tesla, two separate recalls this month have issued warnings to drivers of more than 76,000 electric vehicles. The first on October 10 recalled 12,963 2025 Model 3 and 2026 Model Y electric cars. This was issued after the company found that the battery pack contactors may fail, causing the vehicles to lose drive power. Five days later, Tesla recalled 63,619 Cybertrucks from 2024 to 2026. The vehicle software in these models can cause the front lights to be too bright, adversely affecting the vision of other drivers. NHTSA noted that this lighting issue means the trucks fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS), which regulates how bright headlights can be on the road. Other, smaller recalls last week included 24,238 Jeep Wrangler 4XE vehicles pulled due to a software glitch messing up signals between computer parts and causing a reset. The Jeep recall focused on 2023 to 2025 models of the plug-in hybrid version of the Wrangler. General Motors has also recalled 22,914 vehicles due to tires having bad rubber in the base, increasing the risk of the tread peeling off and causing the car to swerve off the road. The cars impacted include the 2025-2026 Cadillac Optic and 2025-2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV, which were equipped with 21-inch Continental all-season tires. Dealers will be inspecting all four tires and replacing those covered under the recall for free. Meanwhile, another 13,000 Ford Escapes from 2020 have been recalled due to rear brakes that were made wrong and fail to grab the wheels properly. This could make it take longer to stop the car, especially in emergencies, and potentially cause a crash. Overall, AutoInsurance.com has noted that car recalls have increased by about 10 percent year-over-year since 2015. The recalls have largely been fueled by problems with modern vehicles using more advanced electronics, sensors, and software to keep them running.
