Highlights Urban Meyer shot down rumors that Mike Elko could leave Texas A&M, saying, “That’s not happening” on The Triple Option Wednesday. Elko, who has the Aggies at 8-0 and No. 3 nationally, called the speculation “a waste of brain space.” The A&M coach emphasized his confidence in the program’s direction and dismissed outside distractions last week. No matter how loud the coaching carousel chatter gets, Urban Meyer doesn’t see Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko leaving College Station anytime soon. Speaking on The Triple Option Wednesday, the former Ohio State head coach praised Elko and the Aggies, who sit at 8-0 and ranked No. 3 in the nation. Meyer shot down speculation that Elko could be targeted for high-profile openings such as Penn State or LSU. “I got a lot of respect for Mike Elko and that A&M team right now,” Meyer said. “He’s at a big job. That’s not happening.” Elko’s name has circulated in connection with multiple vacancies due to his ties to the Northeast, but he’s made his stance clear. The second-year Texas A&M coach has repeatedly dismissed rumors linking him elsewhere, calling them “a waste of brain space.” Appearing on Bussin’ With The Boys this week, Elko said he’s focused solely on the Aggies’ current run and not on hypothetical job offers. “I think it’s really important to focus on what’s in front of you,” Elko said. “We have a lot of confidence in what we’re doing here at Texas A&M, what this place can be. I just don’t think those conversations are things that are important at all during the season.” Elko first went viral last week after a blunt response to reporters asking about his connection to the open Penn State job. “I don’t discuss it with my players,” Elko said. “I think it’s absolutely hilarious how you guys cover coaches. Three weeks ago, I was getting fired. Now I’m getting hired. Now you don’t want me to stay, but I’m leaving. It’s just, it’s absolutely hilarious. It is a waste of brain space to spend any time talking or thinking about any of that stupidity.” Elko and Texas A&M will be in action on Saturday, Nov. 8 as they travel to take on Missouri. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
