Urban Company revenues jump 37% even as it posts losses

At-home services platform Urban Company, which went public in September, saw its operating revenue increase 37% year-on-year (YoY) to Rs 380 crore for the quarter ending in September, driven by growth in its India consumer services, international operations, and its Native brand through which it sells smart locks and water purifiers. The company posted a net loss of Rs 59 crore compared to Rs 1.8 crore in Q2FY25, largely due to a Rs 44 crore loss from Insta Help, a service launched in March that enables users to book a house help within 30 minutes. In a letter to its shareholders, the Gurugram-based firm said that it expects its losses to continue in the near-term as it invests in the Insta Help category, where it faces competition from venture-funded rivals such as Snabbit and Pronto. The company’s expenses rose to Rs 461 crore in the second quarter from Rs 305 crore in the same period last year. A significant amount of the expenditure was attributed to employee benefits, purchase of stock-in-trade, and other expenses. It operates across India, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, and in Saudi Arabia through a joint venture. The company in a release said that it is winding up its operations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as it has transitioned from a wholly owned subsidiary to a joint venture. India, which accounts for the bulk of the company’s business, generated an operating revenue of Rs 262 crore out of the total of Rs 380 crore. Revenue from its international business segment increased 8% to Rs 41 crore. Founded in 2014, Urban Company operates in two major categories: beauty and wellness, and home repairs and maintenance. The first includes salon and spa services as well as laser hair reduction. The second comprises services such as plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, cleaning, pest control, appliance repair, and painting. With a presence in 51 cities, the firm has 7.4 million annual transacting users and over 50,000 monthly active service professionals. The company said its future growth in core services will come from expanding customer acquisition across existing and new micro-markets, increasing market density, enhancing service partner utilisation, and improving availability and faster fulfilment. The company, which came into the black only recently, saw its operating revenue rise 38% to Rs 1,144 crore, registering a net profit of Rs 240 crore in FY25 against a loss of Rs 93 crore in FY24. A Rs 211 crore deferred tax credit contributed to this turnaround. The company was named Startup of the Year at the ET Startup Awards 2025 on August 28.Also Read | ET Startup Awards 2025: 100X IPO subscription is a responsibility, not a victory lap: Urban Company CEO
