Upper Twp. seeks more input on empty Verizon building

UPPER TOWNSHIP — The township Planning Board asked for professional advice on whether the site of a long-vacant office building in Marmora should be designated an area in need of rehabilitation.
The Township Committee had asked the board to consider the possibility for the property on Route 9 that includes the former Verizon building. The property sits on about 14 acres in one of the areas of the township designated as a town center.
On Thursday, the Planning Board discussed the matter.
“It was sent to our engineers and our planner,” said Mayor Curtis Corson, who is also a member of the Planning Board. “It’s going to be a continued conversation.”
Corson supports the idea, saying the designation gives the township more input into what is ultimately developed at the site.
Upper Township officials are not saying much about plans for a 14-acre site in Marmora where there was once offices for Verizon.
Just outside Ocean City, the Marmora section is one of the busiest commercial areas of Upper Township, and also includes residential developments.
In August, the township approved a memorandum of understanding with Fairhaven Development LLC, which has an agreement of sale for the former Verizon building at 11 Route 9. The developer had sought the designation from the township, and indications are that homes are proposed for the site.
There was no response to messages requesting comment left with one of the members of Fairhaven Development.
The existing building at the site, between a CVS and a hardware store, has long stood vacant and is in disrepair. Corson has described it in public meetings as meeting the definition of blight.
