UPDATED: Tinubu reduces Maryam Sanda’s death sentence to 12 years

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reduced the death sentence of Maryam Sanda, who was convicted in 2020 for the culpable homicide of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, to 12 years imprisonment. In a post on Facebook, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who shared the updated list on Wednesday, wrote, “Updated list of convicts granted presidential clemency or commutation of sentences.” This update is contained in the Instrument of Presidential Prerogative of Mercy (Reduced Terms of Imprisonment and Sentence), 2025, signed by the President on October 21, 2025. According to the document, Sanda’s sentence was commuted from death by hanging to a 12-year jail term based on “compassionate grounds, in the interest of the children and good conduct, embraced new lifestyle, model prisoner, and remorsefulness.” good conduct, remorsefulness, and recommendations by relevant authorities. The new list also showed that 86 individuals, including Sanda, were granted presidential pardon, clemency or had their sentences commuted under the latest approval. Tribune Online reports that this is coming less than an hour after her name was missing from the earlier list of individuals granted presidential clemency and pardon. In the initial report, President Tinubu had approved the Instrument of Presidential Prerogative of Mercy (Grant of Pardon), 2025, and directed the removal of convicts of serious offences such as drug-related crimes, kidnapping, human trafficking, and fraud from consideration for clemency.
