Update Emerges After VAR Accused of ’Serious Error’ For PSG Winning Goal vs Barcelona

An update has now emerged after VAR was accused of making a “serious error” in Paris Saint-Germain’s winning goal during their 2-1 victory over Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday night. Ferran Torres had given the Spanish champions the lead in the 19th minute, but the holders managed to preserve their perfect start to the season.
Senny Mayulu, the latest to make headway from PSG’s talent factory, struck the equaliser just 20 minutes later. With neither side able to assert real dominance, a draw seemed the fairest outcome. However, Goncalo Ramos’ late strike in the 90th minute has since sparked controversy, after VAR was accused of selecting the wrong frame when reviewing an offside call. See below:
The replay shown to broadcasters highlighted the moment after Achraf Hakimi released the ball, making Ramos appear onside, rather than at the actual point of contact for the assist. The fallout has been significant, with the early-season clash already being treated as a litmus test between two favourites for Europe’s top prize. Now, fresh information has surfaced regarding the legitimacy of that decisive decision.
Despite suggestions that those behind the maligned technology manipulated the TV feed to suit their decision, new analysis has shown that the Portuguese striker was onside regardless of the frame.
Archivo VAR, an X account dedicated to reviewing these kinds of decisions, had initially labelled the call a “serious error” in the immediate aftermath. However, after conducting their own in-depth review, their update has brought clarity over whether their first assessment was correct. They wrote (see the full post below):
“Analysis of PSG’s second goal with the appropriate frame. Although the ball is positioned further back, Goncalo Ramos remains in an enabled position. IT IS A LEGAL GOAL. Despite the serious error by the semi-automated offside technology system in selecting the frame, the goal is valid.”
PSG have picked up this season right where they left off, fresh from a campaign that delivered four trophies, including their long-awaited first Champions League title.
