Upalokayukta K.N. Phaneendra paid a surprise visit to the girls’ sports hostel located within the premises of Chamundi Vihar Stadium in Mysuru on Sunday (November 9) and found several discrepancies in its maintenance and functioning. During the inspection, he noticed that the hostel surroundings were unhygienic and poorly maintained. Students complained that snakes frequently entered the premises owing to lack of proper safety measures. The bathrooms and toilets were found to be unclean, and some did not even have proper door bolts. The water storage sump was also reportedly not cleaned. Students further alleged that the quality of food served at the hostel was poor, and there was discrimination in the quantity and type of food given to junior and senior residents. It was also brought to the notice of the Upalokayukta that the indoor stadium was being rented out for private events, and the organisers often left the premises without proper cleaning. Another issue raised was that the hostel generator had not been functioning for the past two years, and no effort had been made to repair or replace it. Following the inspection, the Upalokayukta directed officials to appoint a permanent warden for the hostel at the earliest. Deputy Director of Youth Empowerment and Sports, Bhaskar Nayak, and hostel warden Nethra assured that the issues would be resolved within the next two months and that a compliance report will be submitted after providing the necessary facilities to students. Lokayukta Superintendent of Police Udesh T.J. and other officials were present during the inspection.
