UNRWA Spokesperson: Entire Cities Destroyed in Gaza Strip; We Are Ready to Participate in Reconstruction

Gaza, November 10 (QNA) – Adnan Abu Hasna, spokesperson for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), expressed his hope that the Gaza Strip would witness a comprehensive reconstruction process, noting that UNRWA possesses extensive experience in this field. In statements on Monday, Abu Hasna added that UNRWA has previously constructed numerous housing projects, in addition to dozens of schools and infrastructure within the camps, and tens of thousands of homes in the Gaza Strip. He emphasized that "the destruction inflicted on the Gaza Strip this time is total," pointing out that "entire cities no longer exist, such as Rafah, Bani Suheila, Beit Hanoun, Beit Lahia, and Jabalia Camp, in addition to the destruction of 80 percent of Gaza City." Abu Hasna said that "reconstruction requires a massive project that exceeds UNRWA's capabilities, but the agency is ready to participate and contribute to the best of its ability." Regarding the talk of dismantling UNRWA, Abu Hasna said, "Dismantling UNRWA would mean depriving millions of Palestinian refugees of health, education, and relief services." He warned that "liquidating UNRWA would open the floodgates to extremism, which would have serious consequences for the region," emphasizing that "UNRWA is a factor for regional stability." He added, "Those who want to change the nature of UNRWA's mandate or vote to alter its programs can go to the vote next December on extending UNRWA's mandate for three years and obtain a majority vote, but the agency will continue to provide its services because its collapse would mean the collapse of a massive humanitarian system—the largest in the world."
