Looking for a pulpy thriller where everything isn’t quite as it seems at first? Netflix just dropped all six episodes of one such show.

Angela stars Verónica Sánchez as the woman who has it all: a massive house by the Spanish sea, with a respected husband Gonzalo (Daniel Grao), who has taken in her daughters from a previous relationship as his own.

Except we soon learn that Angela’s marriage is an abusive one, made worse ever since Angela reported Gonzalo.

When her husband is out of town in Madrid, he sends her flowers after a particularly nasty episode. The person delivering them is one Edu (Jaime Zatarain), who says he recognises Angela from school and suggests the pair catch up over a drink.

Charmed by the encounter – and some subsequent flirty texts – Angela agrees. It’s then that Edu notices the bruises on her neck, which she’s tried to cover up with makeup.

Angela and Edu continue to grow close, until Gonzalo suddenly returns home, prompting Edu to share an uncomfortable (and hugely twisty) truth with Angela.

The show is based on the British series Angela Black, which starred Joanne Froggatt as Angela and aired on ITV in 2021 across six episodes – so if you watched that and don’t like your TV too repetitive, this might not be one for you.

But those who have already tuned in to the six-parter have come away with mostly positive things to say, leaving the show a 6.5 rating out of 10 over on IMDb.

Writing a review on the website, Luigi Di Pilla praised the show as a ‘great psycho thriller miniseries’, as you do, with six ‘fast-paced and tense’ episodes to its name.

‘I was never bored and the story kept me involved guessing all the time what will happen next,’ they wrote. ‘If you like Hitchcock movies this one is for you. It will take you on a hell ride.’

What other Netflix shows can you watch now?

Wayward. A ‘terrifying’ Netflix mystery thriller about a town’s dark secrets.
House of Guinness. Follows the story of the Guinness family who founded the world-famous brewery.
Alice in Borderland. A dystopian show often compared to Squid Game for its gory life-and-death stakes.

Luigi urged: ‘Don’t miss it.’ Meanwhile, Gisella Guerrieri said the show was ‘suspenseful and emotionally gripping’ from the first episode.

‘Built around mystery, tension, and personal drama, the story unfolds in a way that’s both surprising and immersive,’ they wrote. ‘Every twist feels earned, keeping the audience guessing without ever losing focus on character development.’

‘In a landscape full of predictable thrillers, Ángela distinguishes itself through emotional complexity, strong performances, and a story that keeps evolving. Whether you’re drawn to psychological drama, mystery, or just enjoy a well-acted and thoughtfully made series, this one is worth your time.’

Angela is streaming on Netflix now.
