BATESBURG-LEESVILLE, S.C. (WIS) - Officials said an unloaded gun was found inside a backpack an Lexington School District Three confirmed to WIS that the firearm was found at Batesburg-Leesville Primary School. In a message sent to parents, faculty and staff, the district said administrators and the school resource officer received a report on Tuesday that a student had a weapon in their backpack. An investigation later led to the gun being discovered in a backpack, but it was not loaded. Officials also said no ammunition was found. The district added that it does not believe the student directly threatened anyone else at the school. No further details were immediately available. Below is the full message sent by the district, obtained by WIS on Wednesday: “Earlier today, administrators at B-L Primary School received a report that a student had been in possession of a weapon in his book bag on Tuesday, October 21st. Administrators and our School Resource Officer acted swiftly and upon further investigation, it was determined that a student did have an unloaded handgun in his book bag on Tuesday. No ammunition was found and at this point in the investigation, it is not believed that the student made any direct threats towards the school or other students. We are sending this message to assure our Panther families that our schools are safe and are continuing on their regular schedules today (Wednesday, October 22nd). Please know that our highest priority in Lexington Three is the safety of our students and our staff members. To be very clear, Lexington Three takes school safety very seriously and any student or adult who jeopardizes our safe learning environment will be subject to the highest discipline and punishment allowed by state law and school board policy."
