CLEVELAND, Ohio - The University Circle Police Department will host a free self-defense and awareness class next month for people with physical challenges. The class will be at 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at the UCI Community Room, at 10831 Magnolia Drive in Cleveland. Participants who attend the event will learn defensive techniques and safety strategies for both travel and home environments. The class is open to anyone with a physical disability. Lisa Nelson of People Helping Euclid will attend the event. Despite undergoing multiple brain surgeries, Nelson, who uses a wheelchair, has become a vital part of her community by helping others. University Circle Police Chief Tom Wetzel described Nelson as “a local hero who helps children and those in need.” Jeremy Prokop, a University Circle police officer, will lead the instruction, focusing on helping people navigate dangerous situations and increase their self-awareness. The class also aims to provide participants with added confidence and preparation for self-protection. The program represents part of the department’s community policing outreach efforts to support residents with physical challenges. Those who attend will also receive additional knowledge and information on how to use items such as pepper spray that could be used to protect themselves.
