As fall settles in with crisp air and vibrant leaves, it brings more than just seasonal change — it reflects the growing uncertainty many Montanans feel about their health insurance through Healthcare.gov. With rising premiums and questions surrounding the future of tax credits, many are unsure how to navigate this year’s Open Enrollment and whether they can still afford coverage. Despite the uncertainty, here are a few key things to keep in mind. Open Enrollment for Healthcare.gov began on Nov. 1 and runs through Jan. 15. However, to ensure your coverage starts on Jan. 1, you must select a plan by Dec. 15. Plans and prices change every year, and this year brings even bigger shifts. We strongly encourage everyone to update their Healthcare.gov application and actively choose a plan by Dec. 15 to avoid surprises. This year’s biggest change is higher premiums. While this may not surprise many Montanans, it’s a direct result of the expiration of enhanced tax credits that previously made coverage more affordable. Without these credits, Montanans will shoulder a larger share of their premium costs. Additionally, all three of Montana’s health insurance carriers have increased their rates — ranging from 11% to 29%. In short, prices are going up. Before deciding you can’t afford a plan, update your Healthcare.gov account. Yes, changes this year may require you to shop around, but taking the time to explore your options could be the difference between having coverage or going without. Don’t let uncertainty keep you from trying. Last year, one-third of Montanans were automatically re-enrolled in their existing plans without updating their information. While that may have worked then, this is not the year to rely on auto-reenrollment. Your current plan may be significantly more expensive next year, and we want to ensure you’re not caught off guard. If you need assistance, we’re here for you. Call our HelpLine at 844 682-6837, or better yet, schedule a virtual appointment with one of our Navigators online at covermt.org/getprepared. We encourage you to start early so you can get the support you need during Open Enrollment. Health insurance is too important to leave to chance. While changes to processes and costs may feel overwhelming, taking a few proactive steps can make all the difference. Update your application, explore your options, and reach out for help if you need it. Montanans deserve access to affordable, reliable coverage — and with the right information and support, you can make sure you and your family stay protected.
