UNC Wilmington issues all-clear after false gun threat
The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) has lifted its shelter-in-place order after an investigation into reports of a potential gunman on campus determined the threat to be a false alarm. At approximately 9:49 pm on Thursday, September 18, 2025, UNCW sent an alert via its mobile app stating, “This is an all-clear message from UNCW Alert. No active attacker on campus. More info about class cancellations, operations to come soon.” Police earlier gave the all-clear for students to return to Dobo Hall.Earlier in the evening, around 7:20 pm, the university had issued a shelter-in-place order following unconfirmed reports of a gunman on campus. The University Police Department (UPD) responded swiftly, deploying multiple law enforcement units across the campus and conducting thorough sweeps of buildings and exterior areas. Students were advised to seek shelter indoors, close windows and doors, and remain in place until further notice. The initial alert stated, “University Police have received unconfirmed reports of a gunman on campus. UPD is investigating. Shelter in place at this time.” University officials continue to monitor the situation and have assured the campus community that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure safety and security.The false alarm comes amid heightened tensions at UNCW earlier this week following a memorial vigil for conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
