UMR Plans Major Expansion to Serve 2,500 Students in Rochester

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The University of Minnesota Rochester has announced expansion plans to accommodate up to 2,500 students. The announcement was made Tuesday during the higher education institution’s annual State of the Campus event. UMR Chancellor Lori J. Carrell said the University of Minnesota Board of Regents will be asked to approve funding for a “near-term facilities expansion of the Rochester campus,” with a request for proposals expected early next year for a portion of the planned project. UMR Unveils Major Campus Expansion Plans A news release says the first phase calls for a lab classroom expansion at Discovery Square, followed by the construction of a facility featuring academic space, a Learning Innovation Center, and additional amenities at an unidentified downtown location. The third proposed project is a student residence and recreational facility on land owned by the University of Minnesota just north of Soldiers Field Memorial Park. The announcement did not include information about price tags or construction timelines. New Academic Programs Focus on Health and Well-being In addition to the capital projects, the University of Minnesota Rochester also announced expanded academic offerings. The new programs will focus on Biomedical Health to support pre-med students and Mental Health and Well-being to address Minnesota’s shortage of mental health professionals. “The Rochester campus is growing boldly and intentionally, rooted in our mission, inspired by our students, and aligned with the University’s strategic vision for the future of learning. With the successful completion of our Onward campaign and new academic program offerings on the horizon, we are poised to expand our physical footprint to match the scale of our ambition. These planned investments in learning, living, and innovation spaces will help us welcome more students, deepen our impact, and continue filling the health care workforce needs of Minnesota,” said Chancellor Carrell. The University of Minnesota Rochester earlier announced that enrollment had reached a record high of 1,122 students for the current school year.
