Maya, 27, followed in her mother’s well-pedicured footsteps when she took a role in Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood as one of the Manson Family members. But before stepping onto set, she went to Uma for a little maternal guidance on what it’s actually like to work with Quentin. Her mom’s advice? Simple: ‘Keep your shoes on.’ The Stranger Things actress spilled the juicy tidbit on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, drawing a laugh from the iconic SNL alum. The comment, whether a cheeky joke or a real anecdote, kicked off (sorry) a fresh round of speculation about the most famous alleged foot fetish in Hollywood. And yet, the evidence would suggest a certain specificity of interest. We’re talking Uma’s sole-ful performance in Pulp Fiction, Uma’s toes in Kill Bill, Margot Robbie’s arches in Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, and, lest we forget, Quentin himself slurping tequila off Salma Hayek’s feet in From Dusk Till Dawn. When the evidence is considered in its totality, it becomes evident that it’s less of an artistic motif than a horny brand identity. When Brad Pitt accepted his Oscar for Once Upon a Time…, he thanked ‘Margot Robbie’s feet’ right after Leo DiCaprio. Uma herself has been playing along for years. Back in 2004, while promoting Kill Bill Vol. 2, she told Conan O’Brien, ‘He staunchly denies it, but he claims every foot shot was essential to the telling of the story.’ Still, Tarantino insists there’s nothing kinky about the many foot shots in his films. That’s just good direction. Like, before me, the person foot fetishism was defined by was Luis Buñuel, another film director. ‘And Hitchcock was accused of it and Sofia Coppola has been accused of it.’ Which, to be fair, is one hell of a Criterion Collection of deniability. But for Maya Hawke, her mom’s advice still stands. Whether it’s a metaphor for maintaining artistic boundaries or just a practical warning, ‘keep your shoes on’ might be one of the most memorable pieces of advice passed down in Hollywood.
