UM Health-West opens new cancer care building as patient volumes quadruple

WYOMING, MI — University of Michigan Health-West has opened its new Hematology and Cancer Care building adjacent to its main campus in Wyoming. The building will house medical oncology and hematology services on its first floor. Infusion services will be provided on the second floor, which is due to open next year, according to a release. “This new building reflects our commitment to provide world-class cancer care close to home for our patients and families in West Michigan,” said Ronald Grifka, president of UM Health-West. “We were nearly bursting at the seams in our present building.” Cancer care patient volumes have quadrupled at UM Health-West over the past 12 months, the health system said. “The new building creates additional space to meet this demand for cancer care, while improving access, convenience and care coordination for patients and their families,” a release said. The new 22,215-square-foot building is located at 2147 Health Dr. SW. The building’s cost was not disclosed. However, part of the project was funded by the UM Health-West Foundation, the health system said. “With support from the University of Michigan and our Foundation, we now have the capacity to serve more cancer patients, more quickly, with the same compassion and expertise our community deserves and trusts,” Grifka said. The new building is part of the Cancer Network of West Michigan. The network includes UM Health-West, Trinity Health Grand Rapids, Trinity Health Muskegon and Michigan Medicine’s Rogel Cancer Center, a release stated. “The Cancer Network of West Michigan is elevating cancer care across our region,” said Lloyd Geddes, the network’s executive director. “Together, UM Health-West, Trinity Health and the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center are providing comprehensive, seamless services. Patients have access to innovative treatments, national clinical trials and support programs, right here in West Michigan.”
