UK travellers have been left confused over guidelines surrounding liquids in hand luggage. New security scanners are being rolled out across UK airports which use advanced technology to scan the contents of luggage. It means that British tourists will not have to remove liquids and large electronic devices, such as laptops, from their bags. Travellers will also be able to carry liquid containers of up to 2 litres, instead of the 100ml limit. The strict 100ml liquid rules were brought in during 2006 following a foiled terror plot to blow up planes with homemade liquid bombs. But advice to follow the 100ml rules has remained in place as passengers will not know if they are passing through an old scanner or a new scanner. This has meant that passengers have received mixed messages regarding what they should do with liquids, Manchester Evening News reports. On Reddit, one user asked: “Do you still need to put liquids in little transparent bags? Terminal 2 carry on luggage.” Another said: “Flew to Barca today (09.09), no clear bags required but needed to be under 100ml”. A third said: “T2 has been bagless for months.” One traveller commented: “Flew this week. No bags just under 100ml.” Some pointed out that the rules still apply, with one writing: “You don’t need to take it out of your bag, but all liquid has to be in a transparent bag still, 100ml rules still apply.” While another said it was easier to use the plastic bags, adding: “Personally I’d put them in the bags but you normally don’t need to take them out. “For two reasons really. Firstly they might notice something they don’t like and pull your bag, if they do it’s just easier that they’re all in the same place. “Secondly, not all airports use this equipment yet so best to do it just in case you need it for the return journey.” A Manchester Airport spokesperson clarified the rules. They said: “New security technology is already in use across all three Manchester Airport’s terminals and the majority of passengers are screened with the new equipment. “In accordance with Department for Transport guidance, passengers should prepare as normal and travel with liquids in containers no larger than 100ml in their hand baggage and follow instructions when they get to security, where plastic bags will be available if needed.” Don’t miss the biggest and breaking stories by signing up to the BirminghamLive newsletter here .
