Households in the UK are being told to 'stay away' from three popular home renovation trends that could make your house harder to sell. Renovating can be costly and time-consuming, but the upside is that it often pays off and can lead to an increase in your property 's value once completed. Those considering selling their home may feel inclined to upgrade certain areas to get the best price , with many people turning to the likes of TikTok for inspiration on home improvements. But homeowners are now being warned that certain home trends can actually have the opposite effect. Join the Manchester Evening News WhatsApp group HERE James Newman, an interior designer from luxury property company Raffle House, says that not all design trends will boost property values and could even make homes "harder to sell", reports the Express. "If you don't want to waste your money, these are the trends to stay away from," James said. The hashtag #wallpaperdecor has amassed a staggering 57.5 million views on TikTok, where users share their inventive wallpaper décor ideas for interior design inspiration. Despite the growing popularity of unique wallpaper, incorporating it into your property "won't add any value". "Wallpaper is a personal choice, and while quirky wallpaper can look good on a feature wall, most of the time it's going to put off potential buyers, and it is something you should remove when selling your home," James advised. Furthermore, quirky wallpaper can be pricey depending on wall sizes and represents a cost "you won't recuperate when you sell". With a massive 239.8 million views, the #mediawall hashtag ranks among TikTok's most popular interior design trends. A media wall usually features a large flat-screen television, LED lighting and an integrated fireplace. Whilst they're fashionable at the moment, many buyers don't regard them as essential. "When you buy a home, you often don't want to purchase other people's technology, such as TVs, as they go out of date quickly," the designer explained: "The biggest problem I have with media walls is that they often are built for large TVs. If you move home and take your TV with you, the new buyer then has to buy a 65-plus-inch screen to fill the gap. "Not to mention, they will need to rewire the wall. A media wall may look good, but it won't add value to your home and will put buyers off." Noticeable home improvements typically add value to a property, but wooden panelling can prove hit or miss when it comes to home enhancements. With more than 34.1 million views, the hashtag #Woodpanel is another trending TikTok design movement that ought to be avoided. When executed properly, panelling can bring style to a home; however, on TikTok, users frequently opt for slat panels, which are "thin and look cheap". "Once again, panelling is going to be a personal preference, and if someone doesn't like it, they will have to pull the panelling down and replaster the walls, which is an added expense someone won't want when moving into a new home," James said. "Even if you do like the slat panels, they can be expensive to purchase and won't add any value to your property." Sign up to our Manchester property newsletter here
