UK drivers urged to keep four items in their car

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is encouraging motorists to stock four essential items in their vehicle to ensure they’re better equipped for emergencies. With conditions across Britain continuing to turn increasingly cold and wet, numerous drivers may encounter a heightened risk of witnessing or becoming involved in accidents.

As a rule, it’s recommended to venture out in deteriorating weather only when absolutely essential. A greater likelihood of collisions also means a greater chance of sustaining injuries or finding yourself in circumstances where emergency supplies become crucial.

The items suggested by the DVSA can be stored quite simply in your car’s boot and might prove invaluable during your winter journeys, reports Bristol Live. Posting on X (previously called Twitter), the DVSA stated: “Keep your car emergency ready! Pack a simple kit with: A torch, jump leads, emergency food, first aid kit.

“Having just a few essentials could prepare you for the unexpected”. Having these recommended supplies in your vehicle ensures you’ll be ready for even the most dire circumstances, particularly should your car fail during especially harsh winter weather. Standard advice from the Highway Code also establishes several fundamental principles for winter driving.

Rule 228 of the Highway Code declares: “In winter check the local weather forecast for warnings of icy or snowy weather. DO NOT drive in these conditions unless your journey is essential.

“If it is, take great care and allow more time for your journey. Take an emergency kit of de-icer and ice scraper, torch, warm clothing and boots, first aid kit, jump leads and a shovel, together with a warm drink and emergency food in case you get stuck or your vehicle breaks down.”

The Highway Code also advises that you should ensure you check all of the following before setting off on your journey during the colder months:

You should be able to see, so clear all snow and ice from all your windows remove all snow that might fall off into the path of other road users You should ensure that lights are clean and number plates are clearly visible and legible Check your planned route is clear of delays and that no further snowfalls or severe weather are predicted. Make sure the mirrors are clear and the windows are demisted thoroughly
