The University Grants Commission (UGC) has released a new list of 22 fake universities that have been operating without approval and falsely claiming to be recognised higher education institutions. According to the UGC, these institutes are not authorised to grant degrees under the UGC Act, 1956, and any qualification awarded by them is academically and professionally invalid. The latest case highlighted by the commission is the Institute of Management and Engineering, located in Kotla Mubarakpur, Delhi. The UGC clarified that this institute has not been established under any Central or State Act and is not recognised under Sections 2(f) or 3 of the UGC Act. Therefore, the engineering degrees issued by it have no legal or academic value. The UGC further stated that the institute does not have recognition from either the Central government or any state government. Citing Sections 2(f) and 3 of the UGC Act, the notice made it clear that degrees awarded by such unapproved institutions carry no official or legal standing. These fake universities, the commission noted, often target students who are unaware of official verification procedures. The UGC has also advised students to verify the status of any university or higher education institution from official sources before applying for admission. This, it said, is essential to safeguard their academic credentials and future career prospects.
