Mogadishu (HOL) – Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF)
serving under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia
(AUSSOM) have killed a senior Al-Shabaab commander in the Lower Shabelle
The militant leader, Osman Hussein Bune Amiir, widely
regarded as the general commander of Al-Shabaab fighters in Lower Shabelle, was
killed in an ambush by UPDF troops near Buulomareer on Sunday, September 14,
according to the UPDF Directorate of Communications.
Sector One Commander, Brig. Gen. Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga,
said the operation also led to the recovery of a pistol with three loaded
magazines, a pouch, binoculars, and two mobile phones, among other items.
Brig. Gen. Ssemwanga also inspected Forward Operating Bases
(FOBs) in Qoryoley and Goloweyn to assess operational readiness and troop
welfare. He was accompanied by Lt. Col. Justus Magyembe, Contingent Logistics
and Engineering Commander, as well as commanders responsible for Explosive
Ordnance Disposal and Women’s Affairs.
Last month, Ugandan troops under AUSSOM, working in
coordination with the Somali National Armed Forces (SNAF), killed more than 50
Al-Shabaab militants, including several senior commanders, during a major
operation in Bariire, also in Lower Shabelle.
