University at Buffalo athletic director Mark Alnutt will receive a $50,000 raise with his new contract extension, which was announced last month by the university.
Alnutt will earn an annual base salary of $345,000, according to the terms of his contract extension, which The Buffalo News obtained through a Freedom of Information Law request. His previous guaranteed annual base salary was $295,000.
UB announced Alnutt’s contract extension Aug. 21, two days after Alnutt signed the extension agreement. His current contract began retroactive to Aug. 1 and runs through July 31, 2030.
Alnutt has been UB’s athletic director since March 2018. UB last gave Alnutt a contract extension in May 2021. That extension ran through May 12, 2026.
Alnutt’s contact extension also sets up a buyout structure through the duration of the contract.
Under his previous contract, if UB terminated Alnutt without cause, UB would owe him the remainder of his base salary through the duration of his contract.
Under the new contract extension terms, Alnutt would receive $650,000 if he is terminated between Aug. 1 and July 31, 2026.
That would drop to $400,000 if he is terminated between Aug. 1, 2026, and July 31, 2027; to $300,000 if he is terminated between Aug. 1, 2027, and July 31, 2028; to $250,000 from Aug. 1 2028 to July 31, 2029; and to $150,000 from July 31, 2029, to Aug. 1, 2030.
If Alnutt was to leave UB before his contract expired, under his previous contract either he or his new employer would owe UB one half of the “basic annual salary” for the remaining term of the contract.
Under the new contract extension terms, if Alnutt terminates his contract, he or a third party would owe UB $650,000 if he leaves between Aug. 1 and July 31, 2026. That would drop to $400,000 if he is leaves between Aug. 1, 2026, and July 31, 2027; to $300,000 if he leaves between Aug. 1, 2027, and July 31, 2028; to $250,000 from Aug. 1 2028 to July 31, 2029; and to $150,000 from July 31, 2029, to Aug. 1, 2030.
