The U.S. Department of State has issued a travel advisory for Jamaica, urging travelers to exercise increased caution due to crime and COVID-19 concerns. The advisory highlights that violent crime, including armed robbery, assault, and homicide, occurs frequently in Jamaica, particularly in Kingston, Montego Bay, and other urban areas. Travelers are advised to remain vigilant, avoid traveling at night, and stay away from areas known for criminal activity. The advisory also notes that the Jamaican government has increased police presence in tourist areas to improve safety, but visitors should still take personal security precautions. In addition to crime risks, the advisory addresses ongoing COVID-19 challenges. Travelers should stay informed about local health measures, including mask mandates and vaccination requirements, as these can change rapidly. U.S. citizens are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive updates and make it easier for the U.S. Embassy to contact them in an emergency. The embassy also recommends that travelers have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical evacuation.
