An 11-year-old girl from Tyngsborough, Massachusetts, will be honored Saturday morning for helping rescue her 5-year-old neighbor after he fell into a well last month.
Juliana Fischer, who is in sixth grade, will receive the Young Hero Award from the Tyngsborough Fire Department and Massachusetts State Fire Marshal at the town’s health and safety fair.
Tyngsborough officials say in August Juliana heard cries from her neighbor, Jack Bissias, after he fell nearly 20 feet into a well in his front yard. Juliana immediately called 911, rushed to grab a ladder and worked with Jack’s mom to help him climb to safety before first responders arrived at the home.
Jack was taken to the hospital and later released without serious injury.
Juliana is being recognized Saturday for her courage and quick thinking that helped save Jack’s life.
The award will be presented at 11 a.m. at Tyngsborough Elementary School, at 205 Westford Road. State Rep. Colleen Garry will be on hand.
Tyngsborough officials say Juliana completed Student Awareness of Fire Education in October 2023, a program that teaches fire and life safety skills to students across Massachusetts.
